Killing 11 people after shipwreck in the Indian Ocean

Eleven people have drowned when the ship on which they were traveling was overthrown in the storm waters in the Indian Ocean near Kenya, officials report.

Ten of the dead were members of the same family and were heading towards the local airport to catch the plane to Mombasa, said Joseph Kannyiri, manager of the local government, Reuters.

The only survivor was Shekue Kahale, a local politician who ran to become an MP in last week's elections. His wife, four children, and his sister, along with her three children, were among the dead, Kahal said.

We doubt that the ship was overthrown due to sea turbulence,” he said.
