The incident occurred at the moment when 5 suspects as members of a gang attacked agents who were escorting them to the apartment towards the hearing room in court, the Russian Interior Ministry reports.
Three of them were killed in an attempt to escape, while the other two and three security officers were injured. The building was evacuated in a short time.
The suspects were accused of being part of a gang known as GTA, a name taken from the violent game “Grand Theft Auto”. The national criminal group from Central Asian countries allegedly killed at least 17 motorists around Moscow between 2012-2014. They forced vehicles to stop on a main road and killed leaders for still unknown reasons.
All five suspects were handcuffed as they were being escorted to the courtroom, the Russian Investigative Committee further declares. One of them attacked a bodyguard and tried to prevent him as others tried to take the gun. Still not known how they could break free from handcuffs.
When the elevator was opened on the third floor, Russian National Guard officers opened fire. Among the injured security officers is one member of the Guard, who has been transported to the hospital as well as two police officers, the Interior Ministry reports.
A lawyer in the building at the moment of the incident said he heard at least 20 shots fired.
