According to reports President Erdogan has told Mr Mattis about the concern of the support the United States gives the Kurdish militant group YPG.
Turkey is concerned by the support the United States offers to Syria's Kurds, who are helping in the fight against IS jihadists in northern Syria. Ankara names the Kurdish People's Protection Units, or YPG, as a terrorist organisation linked to Kurdish separatists within Turkey, known as the PKK. Turkey has made it clear that it does not support the American decision to send weapons to Kurds in Syria.
The United States and Turkey have named the PKK group a terrorist organisation, but, unlike Turkey, Washington does not even call the YPG group a terrorist organisation.
