Since the new US government's coming to power, the number of official investigations into cases of leaking classified information has tripled. Justice Minister Sessions said even four persons have been charged with publishing secret documents or contacts with foreign countries' secret services.
The angry Trump
President Donald Trump has complained repeatedly in recent months about the fact that parts of his confidential meetings, phone calls and internal documents have been cited in the media. In fact, almost every day confidential information, data, personal details, or phone chat content goes public. President Trump has often criticised the media's work and their practice of being based on favourable sources.
He is particularly angry about leaks of information dealing with the question of suspicious contacts of members of his election campaign team with Russia.
The session is also considering the possibility of taking possible steps towards media publishing confidential information. He said existing regulations regarding circumstances in which journalists may be forced to reveal their resources and materials are under consideration.
Press Freedom Has Borders
“We respect the role of press”, the minister said, but press freedom is not limitless. Journalists should not be unpunished when “jeopardise the lives of other American citizens by publishing relevant national security information. National Secret Service Director Dan Coats added: “If the press publishes inappropriate confidential information, we'll find those who do this. ”
