The Turkish government submitted a request to parliament to extend the state of emergency across the country, which was introduced for the first time after the failed coup effort in July 2016, local media reported on Monday, citing a parliamentary source.
According to broadcaster “NTV”, parliament can make the decision on this issue later in the day.
On Sunday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that the Security Council would consider extending the state of emergency as reasonable, Periscopi broadcasts.
The effort of the July 2016 failed coup left more than 240 people dead and about 2,000 injured. Ankara declared a national emergency situation, with a wave of arrests occurring across the country.
The arrests were mainly targeting officials, legal and educational workers who are suspected of having good reports with the Islamic preacher's movement against Erdogan's government, Fetullah Gulen, with whom he dismissed the accusations and condemned coup efforts.
Ankara's actions were constantly criticised by the European Union as violating human rights under the cover of a national emergency situation./Periscopi/
