Trump at a meeting with Merkel

US President Donald Trump has met German Chancellor Angela Merkel after arriving in Hamburg, Germany, to be part of the G20 summit.

Both leaders extended their hands to each other and spoke briefly before leaving to hold closed - door talks.

So far these two leaders have had moments that have been perceived as unpleasant, in Washington and during Trump's first visit to Europe during May.

The meeting has taken place following warnings that thousands of protesters will march to Hamburg, while 20,000 police officers are committed to maintaining security during the summit.

Organisers have called the protest “G20: Welcome to hell”
