Pristina Mayor Shpend Ahmeti, in March of this year, had declared that in the two documents on which construction permits are issued, the Urban Plan and the Development Plan, the mosque's construction in Dardania neighbourhood in Pristina is not prior to the mosque. At the time, Pristina's chairman had sought the help of civil society and residents to intervene in the Great Mosque project.
Pristina Mayor Shpend Ahmeti, four months earlier, had clarified that the Great Mosque could not be built in the Dardania neighbourhood in Pristina. He had reasoned that in no document of the Communists was preceded by the construction of the religious object for the Muslim community.
“You must understand that we give permission according to two documents: Urban Development Plan and Rule Plan. In either of these two documents it is not for the mosque to be built there”, Ahmeti had said of the economy.
At the time, Shpend Ahmeti had called for the reaction of residents and civil society, urging them to engage in the debate.
But, despite that, the Islamic Community has warned that the mosque will be built soon. Chief mufti Naim Ternava has said that if the municipality does not issue permission, then the object of the Muslim community will be built without procedures.
Several civil society members -- and some residents of Dardania neighbourhood -- have signed a petition, demanding that the mosque not be built near the Kosovo Post.
“S Around here, we as signatories of this document are not against building the mosque in this Pristina parcel, but are still interested in a legal, comprehensive and professional process for our capital”, said in the petition.
