The US Senate voted against the bill introduced by the Republicans for abolishing much of what is known as Obamacarea, without guaranteeing its replacement by another.
45 senators were in favour, while 55 voted against the proposal, including 7 republics.
More and more Republicans are concerned that abolishing the law thus far, without replacing it, would cause many Americans to lose health insurance, so this approach seems to lack sufficient support in the Senate.
On Tuesday, lawmakers rejected a version drawn up by Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell.
The version in question envisioned ending measures for expanding the Medicade programme, which guarantees health insurance for low income Americans.
