During 2016 there were 70 incidents, which, according to the Helsinki Committee, were motivated by hatred. In the annual report on hate crimes prepared by this committee, victims and perpetrators of incidents are usually of different ethnic communities. While 70% of the recorded incidents have occurred in Skopje and the Skopje suburb.

And what we've found for years is that the state does not take adequate measures to prevent hate speech, but also crimes and incidents motivated by hate. First of all, because these incidents on the part of the courts are not handled properly, they are most often treated as a crime of violence, thus not given the necessary qualifications, because these works are considered serious works”.
Referring to this report, the incidents have been motivated by the political crisis, which has been associated with the high-level declaration of the anger language as well as parliamentary elections.
According to the submitted figures, 46% have been of ethnic affiliation, 36% for political definition, 16% because of refugee status, 4% for religious affiliation and 1% for racism.

“Most often, perpetrators are young people and most often the reason for these incidents and hate crimes is ethnic affiliation.// We should not overlook cases of high levels of xenophobia when it comes to refugees because during the refugee crisis, we have noted an increase in the number of cases against those who have crossed our country's territory and who flee their countries to save their own” lives.
The Helsinki Committee estimates that there is a 60% increase in incidents in 2016 compared to 2015. Refugees and migrants who transit through the territory of the country are often exposed to great danger of becoming victims of hate crimes.
