About 1,000 people gathered in Moscow in protest of the heavy controls the government has undertaken on the internet. The Internet, at the moment, is the tool where free speech exists to a small extent in the state of Russia. The demonstration that stretched between the “Pushkinskaya” and “subway station Sakharov Prosto” was organised on Sunday against cyber censorship, and they demanded “the expulsion of the Russians prosecuted for publishing internet content”.
Demonstrators shouted: “No censorship, not dictatorship” and “Across the state of police” In the slogan of some demonstrators, “Russia was written without Putin and without spoting”.
Web Page O VDInfo, who monitors the arrests of political activists, said three people had been arrested, and another had been arrested for spreading propaganda material for the opposition leader, Alexei Navajo.
The demonstrators also sought the release of mathematician Dmitry Bogatov, who was arrested on charges of organising riots and calling for terrorism via the internet.
They also demanded the resignation of the chief of “Roskomnandor”, the state's spotter.
City authorities allowed up to 10,000 people to gather for the march. A journalist for the French news agency AFP praised turnout between 1,000 and 1,500. According to police, the number of demonstrators was 800.
The Russian state has recently halted several companies operating in the country, including LinkedIn and Telegram, and restrictions on using virtual private networks (VPN).
On the eve of the protests, the state legislature adopted a bill banning the use of anonymous and VPN services that allow access to internet sources.
The bill was carried out by “Roskomnandor” at the initiative of the Russian Security Council. The authors argue that this will help limit access to extremist materials.
The Human Rights Organisation published a report last week condemning the action of the Russian state that violates the internet, saying Russian authorities have “intensed a blow to freedom of expression in recent years”./Periscopi/
