Maduro in a television talk has said that this decision contributes to peace in the country.
Lopez has thus left the cell after clearing three of the 14 years of his sentence, given in 2014 for inciting violence during anti-government protests.
He was being held in a prison in the vicinity of the Karak capital and has always claimed innocence.
Venezuela has recently experienced a massive wave of anti-government protests, similar to those for which Lopez was charged and put in jail. The opposition in the Latin country seeks early elections and accuses President Maduro of mismanaging the economy.
