Eight people were found dead inside a truck parked outside a <x0Walmart” store in San Antonio, Texas state, police officials have said.
Twenty others are in critical or serious condition, some believed to have undergone heart attacks and dehydration, and have been sent to the hospital, reports the BBC.
The police have not told of the origin of the vehicle, but have confirmed that the driver has been detained. The first suspicions are in a case of trafficking.
The U.S. migration department is trying to find clues for the victims.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said during a news conference that troops were discovered after a call by a Walmart employee who was approached by a person from the truck looking for water. He said some others might have fled to the nearby forest.
The chief of firemen, Charles Hood, said they arrived at the scene after midnight and found eight people with no signs of life on the back of the truck, who had no functional air cooling system and no water signs inside.
He has confirmed that at least 2 of the victims were of school age.
