Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was released today, just days after a commission decided to release him prematurely from a 27-month sentence for corruption.
71-year-old Olmert left Maasiyah prison in central Israel without making comments to reporters.
He was sentenced in 2014 for accepting tens of thousands of dollars in bribery regarding a controversial construction project in Jerusalem when he was mayor of the city.
Mr. Olmert described his fall from prime minister to a person convicted of criminal offence as “something painful and strange”.
He gained international fame for the resumption of peace efforts with Palestinians at the US conference Annapolis in 2007, even though these efforts failed.
