Protesters in a small town in southwest France built a wall around the entrance of an abandoned hotel to prevent it from being used as a shelter for immigrants.
Tens of the town of Semeac set up an 18m-long and 2m high barrier around the Forum 1 hotel. According to residents, local authorities have not discussed with them the plan to house about 85 immigrants in the building.
Local authorities have not yet commented on building the wall, perhaps to avoid even more severe confrontation with residents who seem firm in their stance.
The inhabitants worked all night to build up the wall in their town located in the Pyrenees Mountains. Representatives of them said they are not against housing for immigrants, but at the beginning the needs of tax - paying residents should be taken into account.
They warned that their town of about 5,500 people is unable to cope with the influx of immigrants, which Paris seems to be leaving large centers and taking refuge in small towns like Semeac.
French authorities have purchased dozens of buildings like the empty hotel in Semeac all over the country and have not lacked confrontations with residents of these small communities.
