EU gives Greece 209m euros for handling refugee crisis

The new aid package comes after that of 192m euros provided by the EU Emergency Support Mechanism in 2016. The new fund doubles emergency support for Greece by raising the total aid to 401m euros.
The EU has mobilised over 1.3 billion euros in aid to Greece by 2020 for management of migration and external borders.
Since 2015, Greece has been one of the main gateways to Europe of over 1 million refugees and immigrants fleeing conflicts and poverty in the Middle East and North Africa.
Over 60,000 refugees and immigrants have been trapped in Greece since mid-February 2016 following the closure of borders along Western Balkan routes.
