Firefighters continue to face flames in the forests of Montenegro, while some towns and villages on the Adriatic coast are increasingly threatened.
A Ukrainian plane has joined the battle of firefighters in Montenegro, as the country called for international assistance to quench the flames that are fuelling everything in its path. Other aid, according to authorities, is expected to arrive from Switzerland and Bulgaria as well.
Meanwhile, in Croatia, it has started doing balances after fires that burned wide forest areas on the southern Adriatic coast. Fires that began Sunday, assisted by strong winds, spread into a wide area, reaching as far as Split. The flames threatened homes in villages, and at one point they reached the eastern neighborhoods of the city.
On Wednesday, most of the fires were placed under control by hundreds of firefighters and army personnel, allowing local residents to face the damage left behind. A Croatian official said local authorities would classify the event as a natural disaster, which would enable government assistance in the assessment and repair of damage caused by fires that destroyed 4,500 hectares of pine forests and other vegetation, as well as dozens of blocked vehicles. /papsy. al
