Afghan troops have invaded a district south of Helmand, controlled by Taliban, government officials have said.
The expanded operation began on Saturday, after Afghan troops were launched in three different directions, which later provided air support, government spokesman for the region Omar Zowak has declared.
Zowak has said Afghan troops have taken control of the Nawa region and its nearby areas, which were occupied by the Taliban nine months earlier. According to him, at least 12 Taliban militants have been killed and two Afghan police officers have been injured during the action in Nava. The Taliban are very present at Helmand.
During July, an American soldier has been killed and two others have been injured in an attack allegedly carried out by the Taliban in Nawa. There are about 13,000 American soldiers in Afghanistan and other allied countries.
