Putin met by Syrian President Bashar Assad after arriving at the Russian air base Hmim, the Interfax news agency reports.
He had declared in March 2016 that he was planning to withdraw most of the Russian troops from Syria.
“I order the defence minister and chief of general staff to pull the group of Russian troops into their permanent bases”, Putin said, broadcasts Kosovars.
“I have made a decision: an important part of the contingent of Russian troops stationed in Syria will return home to Russia”, he added.
