The head of the Hebrew Orthodox faction Satmar Hasidic, Rabbi Aaron Teittelbaum, in an event held on Saturday evening at the New York Expo Centre in the Bronx, condemned the White House's decision made several days earlier by President Donald Trump for recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
“Jerusalem, the holy city, will not be the capital of the Syonist State, even if the President of the United States says it is”, Teittelbaum said, Israel National News reported.
“Just as the Jews did not accept President Truman's statement in 1948 that recognises Israel as a Jewish state, neither do we today know it”.
Satmar is anti-symist and does not know the formation of the state of Israel, writes The Jerusalem Post.
Teittelbaum was speaking before thousands of followers in the annual event marking Cuff Alef Kislev, which commemorates the day of Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum, founder of the satmar movement in America, fled from the Nazis during the Holocaust in 1944.
Jerusalem is a holy city, a city of devotion. Syonism is the opposite of the fear of God and Torah, and it has nothing to do with the city of Jerusalem”, Teittelbaum also said.
