As many as 30,000 protesters gathered by the Polish Committee for the Protection of Democracy (KOD) on Saturday were denied “reforms” by the conservative populist government PIS of Prime Minister Beata Szydlo.
Adam Michigan told the protesters that the KOD did not want to overthrow the government, but wanted what he called the Jaroselae Kaczynski” government to respect Poland's existing constitution, reports “Deutsche Welle”, the Periscopi broadcast.
Party Leader Law and Justice ( PIS) Kaczynski is widely considered the real power agent behind the Szydlos administration, though he does not hold any government post. Michigan said if PIS cabinet members fail to apply our requests “society would be obliged to remove them from power through democratic elections”.
“We cannot accept policies that isolate Poland and cause conflicts with neighbours”, Michnik said.
Varshava is facing a deadline in late October to change its laws to the constitutional court or face sanctions for violating EU norms on rule of law and democracy.
Kaczynski has already described the scenario of sanctions, including losing the right to vote in EU institutions, as “legally outside EU treaties”.
Protesters Saturday also denounced Polish lawmakers' measures to prevent abortion and criticised a newly-elected review of the school that would change a 1999 reform.
At a special rally in Warsaw on Saturday, the Polish sought more funds for the country's chronic health system and for its medical personnel.
