Ramisi's shocking confession of the Srebrenica massacre tells of Serb crimes

Almost a year since Ratko Mladic's trial was postponed at The Hague's Tribulal, a decision for him is expected today. For those who have suffered either directly or indirectly, there is a punishment for them. Ramiz Nukic survived the massacre in the Bosnian town of Srebrenica. In July 1995, after the siege of [...]

Ramiz Nukic survived the massacre in the Bosnian town of Srebrenica.

In July 1995, following the siege of the entire Srebrenica enclave, which was a UN-protected shelter, Serbian troops commanded by Ratko Mladic, attacked the area and entered the city, reports “DW.com”, report Periscope.

The next few days brought something no one expected since World War II. Up to 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were killed in a square organised by Mladic in the Srebrenica region.

Ramisi is one of those awaiting the decision on Mladic. The Serbian criminal was indicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague for war crimes and atrocities during the 1992-95 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

No one can return the victims,” Ramisi says.

The war criminals will be punished, but will be released one day, while the victims will never return”, Ramiszi tells “Deutsche Welle”.

While trying to save Serbian troops, Ramiz lost his father and two brothers, one of whom was still a boy. Everyone must face justice, courts have their power, but no one can fulfill my desire to bring back my father and my brothers. No matter how they condemn Mladic, it won't be enough for me”, Ramiz says.

He says he has found better justice in searching for victims' bones. We should remember our children and our grandchildren for what happened here and that they should never forget the victims so that something like that never happens to anyone”, Ramisi says.

According to the Institute of Missing Persons of Bosnia and Herzegovina (MPI), about 7,000 people have yet to be found, including about 1,000 victims of the Srebrenica massacre.

Recently there are reports of new mass graves, as said Leyla Cengic, a spokesperson for the MPI, but <x0instinstinti is not giving up his search for the missing and the truth to help the victims' families find and bury their loved ones and find peace. ”

Searching for Justice

Seven years after the Srebrenica massacre in 2002, Ramisi decided to return to his home in a village on the Kaninica Hill in the Bratunac municipality near Srebrenica, which after the Dayton Peace Accord ended the war in the Balkan country at the end of 1995, the Serb entity called Republika Srpska.

He has been unemployed ever since, so he owns a piece of land containing dozens of sheep, some chickens, and a cow.

He says he was unable to find peace because he could not stop thinking about his father and two brothers. Where were their remains? So very soon after he returned to his village, he decided to try to find them, to find their bones.

He remembered that they were divided into the woods to the hills over his house. He managed to survive and reach the territory that was under the control of the Bosnian Army (Muslim) at the time, but a few weeks later he told them that his father and brothers had been killed.

Equipped with a wooden stick, Ramiz Noic began searching nearby hills and forests. He says he was shocked by the number of skeletons and bones he saw there.

Ramiz, however, failed to find his father and brothers. Several years after the war, their remains were discovered in a mass grave in Liplje, near the northeastern Bosnian town of Zvornik.

I'm buried in Potocari Memorial Graveyards, and now I'm calm. I have a feeling they're here with me”, Ramisi says.

Ramiz's Life Mission

The idea that many mothers, sisters and boys are still looking for their loved ones encourages Ramiz in his mission to find the victims and help their families find peace. He still walks through the woods, putting aside fallen leaves and looking under rotten stones and trees for the bones of murdered people.

He explains that Kamenicino Hill was the place where Bosnian Serb troops conducted one of their first ambushes to stop people trying to escape Srebrenica in the woods and in the hills.

Then he stops. Under a forest entrance, he saw three bones a bone on one side, a long bone and a bone belonging to a shoulder. He inspects them carefully, puts them aside, and marks them ready for the people who manage MPIE.

Research is often difficult, he says.

Sometimes I find a complete skeleton, sometimes the bones of several different people, sometimes just a few bones, wild animals spread often around them, four years ago we had massive flooding and last year we had a” fire, Ramiz says.

It often covers 30 to 35 miles (30 to 35 km) a day while searching for the remains of the missing. He admits that he has been fortunate, since the terrain is often dangerous.

Bones No Nation

He is determined to continue his mission despite these problems. His determination to find the remains of the victims, as he says, does not harm anyone, so his Serb neighbours from surrounding villages have no knowledge of what he is doing.

“Etnia is not written on bones, people must finally find the truth, know what really happened, I'm looking for bones and I don't know whether they are Serbian, Croat or Muslim bones (Bosnian)... My wish is just to collect them and bury them with dignity. This is my mission of life “, Ramiz says, removing leaves with his wooden stick./Periscopi/
