The meeting between conservative Chancellor Angela Merkel and Martin Schulz, who took place in Berlin at the president's office, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the mediator in this crisis, began as predicted at around 8:00.
This meeting is aimed at creating a possible alliance within the formation of a government. Both conservatives and Social Democrats have to wait for tomorrow and the internal talks before talking about the meeting's first results.
“For Merkel, this is a struggle for its political survival that has begun”, points out “Spiegel” adding that “Merkel must do everything to form this alliance, the only acceptable one to ensure a sustainable” power.
For more than a month, the country has been headed by a government in charge of running daily affairs, with the conservative Chancellor at the helm.
According to a survey published today, most Germans, about 61 percent expressed themselves in favour of opening negotiations on the issue.
Today's meeting, attended by CSU head Horst Seehofer, will put talks on the right track. But negotiations on a possible joint government will not start before January 2018.
