The special prosecutor investigating Trump's alleged ties with Russia, Robert Maller, has accused former president's chief of campaigning Paul Manafort of plotting against the US and 11 other criminal acts, including tax evasion and forged statements. These are the first charges weighing on people close to Trump since the investigation began. The immediate reaction has been to the president, who stressed that acts in question were not carried out during the campaign but referred to an earlier period.
Former leader of President Trump's campaign, Paul Manafort, has been charged by the FBI with 12 criminal acts, including the plot against the United States.
The news has been confirmed by Special Prosecutor Robert Maller, who is investigating the alleged links of the current American president to the Kremlin.
Manafort is also accused of 11 other illegal acts involving tax evasion, counterfeit statements, as well as of not accepting money transfers from foreign accounts.
However, immediate response has been US President Donald Trump's reaction.
According to Washington's leader, accusations weighing on Manafort have nothing to do with his election campaign, as they refer to an earlier period.
In his post on the social network at the same time, Trump asked that investigators not overlook their work, open files for his former rival, Hillary Clinton and the Democrats.
Paul Manafort, in 2016, led the current president's successful campaign for several months. He resigned when the media reported that the 68-year-old was working for the Ukrainian government led by former President Viktor Yanukovic.
According to experts, Manafort's behaviour to justice shows that Robert Maller is investigating thoroughly those involved in the immediate circle of the current Washington leader.
