Organisers say the goal of the march is to protect Spain's unity and reject the most unprecedented “attack in the history of democracy”, the AP reports.
Leaders of rival pro-unification parties from among conservatives, pro-business liberals and Socialists have joined under the slogan “we are all Catalans. Practical thoughts of living together! ”
March organisers, the Civil Societates Catatalana, have said that over 1 million people have gone out on the road to march. Marsh has not marked any incidents, according to this group.
Meanwhile, police have said that some 350,000 people have participated in the march.
Many demonstrationists have waved Spanish, Catalan and European Union flags, flooding the boulevard into the center of Barcelona.
Some have carried banners with the inscription: “We will not allow Spain to be divided into pieces”, as well as “The regime of a silent nation”.
