Kosovo imported 40% more electricity in May, production from thermal power plants dropped above 45%

Kosovo has significantly increased electricity imports during May 2026, while at the same time it has marked a sharp decline in local production from thermal power plants, data from the Kosovo Statistics Agency (ASK) show.
According to the report, electricity import reached 422.31 GWh, marking growth of 41.29 percent compared to May 2025.
In the same period, gross energy output from thermal power plants dropped to 178.48 GWh, or 45.40 percent less than a year ago, reports Periscope.
Meanwhile, power production from hydropower plants increased by 51.38 percent, reaching 49.22 GWh, while production by wind and solar panels marked an 8.25 percent increase to 39.30 GWh. However, these increases did not suffice to compensate for the fall of production by thermal power plants.
The AKS suggests that electricity consumption during the month reached 398. 66 GWh, growing by 8.88 percent compared to the same month last year, while available gross electricity remained at almost the same level, with a slight drop of 0.11 percent.
The report also shows that coal production dropped by 37.25 percent to about 301 tons, while electricity exports marked a slight 1.58 percent drop, reaching 205.27. GWh.
