Air quality alert before final, FIFA Can Change Protocol

FIFA could be forced to take extraordinary measures just days before the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina.
The two nationals will face each other on Sunday, July 19th, at the “MetLife” stadium in New York and New Jersey, after eliminating France and England in the semifinals respectively.
While Luis de la Fuente and Lionel Scalon are preparing teams for the crucial match, organisers are monitoring air quality in the region with concern.
Smoke caused by fires in Canada has covered the area of New York, causing local authorities to issue health warning and recommend that residents stay indoors whenever possible.
Smoke covers the final area
Despite warnings, Spain's national decided to train in the open air on Thursday, July 16.
Argentina has not yet held exercises in New York, while its first session is scheduled for Friday, July 17th.
Concerns have also increased after statements by a dancer's father, who participated in the trial at the “MetLife” stadium.
She's writing me that the situation is bad. He says it's hard to jump because the air feels heavy”, he said.
Women's football match interrupted several times
Air quality problems have already affected sporting activities in the region.
National Women's Soccer League match between Gotham FC and Washington Spir, held on Wednesday, was interrupted twice during each part due to the high pollution index.
Cuts were applied in line with the League protocol for protecting the health of players.
“Air quality was heavy”, said Washington Spirit star Trinity Rodman after the match.
I don't want to use it as an excuse, but I think the players from both teams constantly wanted another vacation. ”
FIFA could add disruptions during final
Throughout the 2026 World Cup, FIFA has applied vacations for hydration among each part, despite weather conditions.
However, if the air quality remains at dangerous levels, organisers may be forced to impose additional disruptions during the finals, similar to the measures applied at the American Women's Championship.
Such a decision would amount to deviation from the usual protocol of a World Cup final, but the health of football players, staff and spectators is expected to take priority.
Neither does taking more drastic measures, if conditions deteriorate before the start of the meeting.
New York Governor Warns Citizens
New York Governor Kathy Hochul called on residents to be careful and to stay informed of the latest developments.
“With smoke from fires in Canada that are again affecting air quality across the country, we urge New York residents to be aware of the situation and to take measures to stay safe this week”, its statement says.
“We are continuing to co-operate with local authorities to monitor conditions and distribute masks in order to protect the most endangered categories. ”
“I encourage all citizens to attend the updates and take the necessary measures to protect themselves, neighbours and their family”, she added.
Concern about air quality is not limited to New York. The match between Chicago Fire and Vancouver Whitecasts was postponed Thursday due to air pollution in the Chicago area.
FIFA is expected to continue monitoring the situation until the final day, while any decision on changing the protocol will depend on air conditions at the “MetLife” stadium.
