EU reacts sharply to government, wants to stop collapses at Weeman Lake immediately

The European Union office in Kosovo has reacted sharply to the collapse of houses near Lake Weman, praising that the move took place at the time when the affected residents had initiated judicial procedures within the 15-day legal deadline set in public company Iber-Lepenc's announcements.

In a public response, the EU said it is “concerned over the lack of respect for regular legal procedure in this and in several other recent cases in northern Kosovo since February of this year”.

It called on authorities to stop similar actions immediately until all legal issues are addressed.

“The EU calls for the immediate interruption of any collapse, forced evacuation or further possession until concerns related to regular legal procedure, proportional, property rights, human rights and effective legal means are properly addressed”, said in response.

According to the EU Office, authorities must engage without delay with residents and municipalities affected to find solutions in accordance with the law.

“Autorities must co-operate without delay with the affected residents and municipalities and consider legitimate solutions”, the announcement noted.

The EU has also raised concerns about the involvement of the Kosovo Police in such operations, underlining that the Kosovo Police's <x0yr in such operations should remain strictly within its legal mandate, be based on demands or clear decisions of competent authorities, and properly document”.

Full response:

The EU in Kosovo laments yesterday's collapse of houses near Gazivoda Lake/Wyman, which occurred while affected residents had initiated judicial procedures within the 15-day deadline set in public company Iber-Lepenc/ announcements. Ibar-Lepenac for the release and clearing of land.

The EU is concerned about its lack of respect for regular legal procedure in this and in some other recent cases in northern Kosovo since February of this year.

It calls for immediate interruption of any collapse, forced evacuation or further possession until concerns concerning regular legal procedure, proportionality, property rights, human rights and effective legal means are addressed properly.

Authorities must co-operate without delay with residents and affected municipalities and consider legal solutions.

The role of the Kosovo Police in such operations should remain strictly within its legal mandate, be based on demands or clear decisions of competent authorities, and properly documented.

The irreversible implementation measures in the context of developing procedures and controversial property claims raise serious concerns about rule of law.

In line with Kosovo's European path, The EU expects authorities to address these concerns with urgency and transparency and ensure that similar actions are not repeated.
