NATO launches gradual reduction of KFOR troops in Kosovo

Due to continued improvement of the security situation in Kosovo in recent years, NATO in January interrupted the delocation of reserve forces under its mission in Kosovo (KFOR), after more than two years of continuous rotation.

Since the security situation in Kosovo remains generally stable, NATO will optimise KFOR's presence in Kosovo and will gradually adjust its current number of troops over the coming year.

So stated US Air Force General Alexandrus G. Grinkewich, Supreme Allied Forces Commander in Europe (SACEUR).

“NATO and KFOR are fully committed to security and defence in Kosovo”, General Grinkewich said. “This commitment has led to increased stability, as Kosovo security organisations have become more capable. Current conditions provide opportunities to further optimise KFOR size and positioning”.

General Grinkewich also reaffirmed NATO's strong commitment to the Western Balkans, a region of strategic importance for the Alliance, whose security is directly linked to security in Euro-Atlantic space.

He added that NATO would not allow the creation of a security vacuum.

The optimism, announced as the mission marks its 27th year, is being implemented under the existing SACEUR competencies and follows a detailed review and an assessment of the security situation based on intelligence data.

The planned reductions are expected to be realised in line with national rotation cycles, delocation and troop withdrawal between this year and next year. This optimism will take place gradually and in line with conditions on the ground, while it can be annulled if security developments require this.

Since 1999, KFOR's presence has been constantly adapted to ensure that the mission remains suitable for its purpose and to respond to developments in the security situation. After increasing tensions and violence in 2023, including unjustified attacks on KFOR peacekeepers in Zvecan, KFOR received the largest reinforcement in more than a decade, with the delocation of nearly 1,000 additional soldiers.

“With the current stable security situation, KFOR's presence can be adjusted to circumstances, effectively ensuring a secure environment for all citizens and communities living in Kosovo, as well as freedom of movement, at any time and impartially”, was told in the announcement published on the Supreme Staff website of Allied Powers in Europe (SHAPE, reports Klankosova.tv.

The report also said that NATO continues to support the facilitated dialogue by the European Union between Kosovo and Serbia, “and calls on both sides to commit to resolving pending issues and achieving a solution that respects the rights of all communities”.

According to NATO, “this is essential for long-term security in Kosovo and stability in the region”.

News of launching NATO forces' cuts in Kosovo has been published by news agency Reuters.
