US, Iran exchange air strikes for second day in a row

The United States conducted a new round of air strikes on military targets in Iran on June 10th, urging Tehran to carry out revenge attacks against US military targets in Bahrain and Kuwait.

U.S. Central Command, CENTCOM said its forces carried out additional <x0-> surveillance attacks”, hitting Iranian military surveillance capacities, communication systems and air defence positions throughout Iran.

The operation included tools of the US Marine Corps, Air Force and Military Navy, which used high-speed ammunition against the targets Washington said posed a threat to American forces and international trade transport to the region's waters.

“Sulmet are the response to Iran's unjustified and ongoing aggression”, CENTCOM said in a statement in the early hours of June 11th, adding that American forces are “open, powerful and ready”.

Shortly after, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced they had hit US military targets in Bahrain and Kuwait in response to US attacks.

In a statement, I RRC said it had hit 18 targets linked to the US Army in two waves of operations against air bases “Ali Al Salem” and “Ahmed Al Jaber” in Kuwait. According to them, Iranian forces also hit the “Sheikh Isa” air base in Bahrain.

US officials have not announced the extent of possible damage, while the impact of the attacks remained unclear.

Bahrain's Interior Ministry said the sirens for air strikes fell throughout the Gulf kingdom for the second time and called on citizens and residents to remain calm and move towards the nearest safe place.

Meanwhile, Kuwait's civil aviation authority announced on June 11th that the country's airspace has been reopened and that commercial traffic is “returned to normal”, after a series of Iranian attacks triggered their temporary closure.

The latest clash represents significant escalation of confrontation between Washington and Tehran, raising concerns of broader instability in the Gulf region and of threats to energy infrastructure and sea trade routes.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called for the immediate ban on hostilities, warning that the Middle East is sinking “down and deeper into crisis” and that the consequences extend far beyond the region.

The day before, US air strikes hit several targets in Iran in response to Iran for the collapse of an American Army helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz. Later, Iran carried out attacks on American bases in the region in a response.

The June 10th attacks took place just hours after US President Donald Trump told reporters that “we hit them hard yesterday and will strike again powerful today”.

Before the air strikes, Iranian President Massoud Puseskian said on X that his country would withstand any pressure and that Trump's threats were a sign of Washington's despair.

Speaking to reporters, Trump also claimed that the United States has taken oil from Iran.

I'm making it public today for the first time, but we've put out millions of barrels of oil, millions of barrels every night”, Trump said, adding that Iran “has already understood this”.

Regarding negotiations with Iran, Trump added: “We want agreements that make sense, we want an agreement that works. We were very close to a deal, but they continue to drag us on, they keep playing with us like we were stupid”.

Trump said Iran has already agreed not to develop nuclear weapons... one of Washington's main demands, but the agreement has not been signed yet.

Earlier Wednesday, the UN nuclear overseer's 35-member board of governors adopted a US-backed resolution that requires Iran to show the remaining reserves of enriched uranium and to allow inspectors to enter the country.

Iranian Ambassador to Austria Reza Najafi told AFP that the resolution is “counter-productive” and an obstacle to talks with Washington.

Earlier, Trump declared that the Iranian Army is “fullymed”, warning Tehran that it will pay “for the fact that “is too late to negotiate a” deal with Washington.

Tehran and Washington have been involved in negotiations since 8 April, when a ceasefire ended the US-Israel bombing campaign against Iran.

However, some complicated issues have hampered reaching an agreement, including the fate of Iranian reserves of enriched uranium, Israel's continuing fight against Hezbollah in Lebanon and Tehran's request that Washington release frozen Iranian funds abroad. / Periscope/
