Germany continues military presence in Kosovo for another year, the president's issue mentioned during debate

For 27 years, German Bundestag votes every year for extending Bundeswehr's mandate to KFOR. On Thursday, June 11th, he renewed it again: 383 pro, 192 against, two abstentions. The new mandate allows for sending up to 400 soldiers. Additional costs: 35.7m euros. The legal basis remains UN Security Council Resolution 1244, adopted in 1999. KFOR is the longest non-stop mission of Bundeswehr outside Germany.
CDU/ CSU, SPD and the Istanbuls voted for. The situation is calm but not certain, the speakers of these parties said, citing abnormalised relations with Serbia, questioning about the long-term US engagement and the political stalemate long created by the lack of consensus for the president's post.
CDU MP Jürgen Hardt called: Kosovo must form governments and elect president without parliamentary majority, neither access to the EU nor membership in the Council of Europe can be realised. For relations with Serbia, Hard said that the solution should come “diplomaticly, peacefully and perhaps even with a new agreement.”
Social Democrat Macit Karahmetoğlu insisted on implementing the 2023 Ohrid Agreement, initiated by former Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The agreement is almost not being implemented. The paramilitary attacks in the north have not turned white with justice. And the United States has left open its long-term commitment. Right in this context, he said, the “a withdrawal signal would be a fatal and wrong sign. ”
Mijatovic for Serbia: “Catch the thief! ”
Boris Mijatovic of the Gelbr began with the good news: “The elections were right, free and without incident.” But immediately warned that “The quality in many cases is deceptive.” He provided an example of the 2023 Banjska attack, one of the most serious incidents in northern Kosovo.
We need to seriously ask who is friend and who is enemy, and by what subtle means operate”, Mijatovic said.
The group's leader continues to be free in Serbia. “Grab the thief!” In the end, Mijatovic called directly on the German government: “Fight decisively for Kosovo's membership in the Council of Europe. That would help many people. ”
192 MPs voted against him, but for the opposite reasons. The nationalist Alternative Party for Germany ( AfD asked for the completion of the mission.
Dr. Alexander Wolff said that „Kosovo is widely considered a failed state. ”
Prime Minister Albin Kurti called <x0Populist pan-Albanian and row-instancer” and accused the German government of allowing itself to be exploited by him.
The projected 35m euros for KFOR would have much better use for our citizens here in Germany”, he said.
E Majta also voted against him, but from another angle.
MP Can ãozdemir recognised the story: Kosovo's “Albanian population had suffered mass discrimination, deprivation of rights and pressure. ”
But the conclusion: “The experiences of the past 25 years clearly show that military interventions cannot create lasting peace. ” And he added: “civil society initiatives, independent media and cross-border meetings do more for understanding than military presence.” / DW
