World Cup begins today: All eyes in North America, 48 nationals will play 104 matches

The football world looks back to North America, as the World Cup officially begins tonight 2026, the largest tournament in history of 48 nationals and 104 games to be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The grand finale will be played on July 19th, as the opening match takes place at the legendary Mexico City Azteca Stadium, where Mexico faces South Africa from 9:00 to our local watch.

For the first time, the World is organised by three countries simultaneously and includes an expanded format of 48 teams, offering more matches, more fans and more chance for surprises.

The opening ceremony in Mexico is expected to bring a major musical spectacle, while host countries will organise festive activities to mark the start of the tournament.

Spain and France among top favourites

Many analysts view Spain as one of the top favourites for the trophy. In the spotlight is 18-year-old talent Lamine Yamal, who is currently considered one of the world's largest football stars.

France remains a serious contender thanks to the quality-filled team and presence of Kylian Mupé, while Argentina, Brazil, England and Portugal are also in the competition for trophy.

Goodbye of a generation of legends

The World 2026 could mark the latest performance on the biggest football stage for Lionel Messin and Cristiano Ronaldon. Argentina will aim to defend the title won in Qatar, while Messi seeks to close the international career with another historic success.

New format brings opportunity for surprises

The expansion of the tour has opened the doors to nationals that have rarely been part of the World Cup. Teams like Jordan, Curachao, and other debut sites will seek to write their own history.

History has shown that the World always produces great surprises and new heroes. From Cameroon in 1990 to Senegal in 2002, the largest stage of football has always been where incredible stories arise.

From tonight, for more than a month, the usual pace of life will be combined with the excitement of the World Cup, while billions of fans around the globe will attend the biggest sports show on the planet.
