Alarm in northern Europe: Russia is rapidly building military bases, satellite images reveal strategic plan

New satellite images have raised concerns in northern European countries, as they show Russia is expanding and rebuilding its military infrastructure near the border with NATO member Finland. Analysts estimate that these movements may be part of a Moscow long-term strategy for strengthening the military presence in the region.
According to Finnish media reports, Russia has launched intensive work on several military bases that had been abandoned or used minimally for decades. One of the main locations is the Kandalaxha area, about 110km from the Finnish border, where a new complex is being built for the deployment of military artillery and engineering brigades.
Satellite photos show massive forest cleaning, large excavations, and the establishment of new military facilities. According to experts, the stationing of thousands of soldiers is planned in this area, turning it into an important strategic point north of Russia.
Similar activities have been observed in Carel and Petrozadovsk, where old Soviet bases are being renovated and roads, warehouses, and other military support facilities are being built. Western experts believe these investments are not directly linked to the war in Ukraine, but to Russia's preparations for a greater military presence along borders with NATO in the coming years.

Finnish and NATO authorities are closely monitoring developments, while praising that there are currently no signs of an immediate threat. However, the expansion of bases and the gradual collection of military capacities are considered significant security signals in the region.
According to security analysts, these movements show the Kremlin is preparing for a new period of strategic rivalry with the West, especially after Finland and Sweden's NATO membership. /Index.hr
