High temperatures total seven deaths from hot to hot

Seven people have died in France because of an extreme heat in early summer affecting a large part of Western Europe, as France and the United Kingdom marked record temperatures for May, and temperatures were expected to increase further Tuesday.

What I can say today is that there have been seven deaths directly or indirectly related to heat”, said government spokeswoman Maud Bregeoon, adding that five of the deaths occurred in drowning.

Meteo France, the national weather agency, said Monday's highest temperature of 37.1 degrees Celsius was registered near Hossegor, in the southwestern Les Landes department, adding that temperatures across the country's west could exceed 36 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

Monday was the hottest day measured for a month since the start of the records, with average national temperature measured in 30 stations across the country, reaching 24.4 degrees Celsius, compared to an earlier peak of 23.7 degrees Celsius dating back to 1944.

The United Kingdom Meteorological Office said Monday was the hottest day of May ever registered in the country, with temperatures reaching 34.8 degrees Celsius at Key Gardens, southwest of London.

In Spain, maximum temperatures of 36-38 degrees Celsius in the Guadiana Valleys, Guadaquiviri and Ebro are expected to continue perhaps until Friday, the state weather service -- Aemet -- adding that in some of those areas, temperatures could reach 40 degrees Celsius.

In Italy's Lacio region, which includes Rome, authorities have imposed restrictions on farm work, construction shipyards, and the distribution sector between 12:30 and 1600.

French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu would hold a meeting with the main ministers Thursday to assess government preparations for heat waves, as more than 350 weather stations across France registered new monthly temperatures Monday.

More new temperatures will be marked in France, Spain and the United Kingdom on Tuesday, weather forecasters said, with temperatures exceeding rates of 12 or 13 degrees Celsius in what Meteo France described as an episode of premature “heat, extraordinary and a length of” expected to last several days.
