Trump again threatens Europeans with 100% tariffs

The US president has again threatened European states with customs duties. Any country that imposes digital taxes on American companies must pay a 100 per cent fee for all cargo exports.
US President Donald Trump's customs threats to European countries return. T. The tariffs would replace existing customs agreements, Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform. This would be worth whether the agreements have been implemented or just signed. Trump added that new tariffs would apply to all goods exported to the US. He justified this step with the fact that some countries are close to establishing digital taxes that would affect American companies. The American president did not mention concrete locations.
In Austria, for example, there is already a digital tax: There, since 2020, large online platforms have been forced to pay 5 percent of their advertising income.
European Commission Responds Firmly
The European Commission dismissed the fees threatened by Trump as unjustified. “The EU and its member states have the sovereign right to regulate economic activities on their territory in line with our democratic values and international obligations”, a spokesman said.
The taxes would apply equally to all major companies, regardless of their origin, and would not be discriminatory. Referring to the Trump threat, the European Commission announced: “If such measures are taken, the EU will react quickly and decisively to protect its rights and regulatory autonomy. ”
The EU has consistently supported a global solution for a fair taxation of the digital economy, in line with G7 finance ministers. This remains our favorite route and we are willing to engage constructively to achieve that goal. ”
EU just approved tax agreement with US
Only on Thursday, EU countries in Luxembourg gave the green light to lifting tariffs for American industrial goods and improving market access to marine and agricultural products from the US. The trade agreement between the EU and the US could thus have been fully implemented soon.
It's not the first time Trump condemns a possible digital tax and threatens me Customs tariff. In August 2025, he had already called for cutting these taxes, not directly mentioning any country. /DW
