Commissioner for Enlargement: Albania-Montenegro in the EU in 2029

EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos has declared that the enlargement process is moving at the fastest pace in the past 15 years, citing some Western Balkan countries as closer to membership.
She said Montenegro could become an EU member by 2029, while Albania is in an advanced phase of negotiations. Kos also cited the possibility of Iceland returning to the EU through the referendum.
“I can name countries; Montenegro will be the new EU member of my commissioner mandate, which is until 2029. I would be very happy if Iceland were to come back - this would be decided with the referendum held at the end of August. Albania is in the process of closing chapters towards membership. So the movement we have in the enlargement process is bigger than in the last 15 years. ”
According to her, a clear pledge is needed by EU leaders to speed up the enlargement process.
She added that enlargement dynamics relate to the war in Ukraine and geopolitical developments in Europe.
