Swedish ambassador seeks compromise, says political crisis is negatively affecting Kosovo

Sweden's Ambassador to Kosovo Jonas Westerlund has called for unity and compromise among political parties in Kosovo, praising that procrastinating the process of forming institutions is negatively affecting the country's economic development.

Westerlund has declared that difficulties in creating governments are not only phenomena in Kosovo, but are increasingly emerging in other European countries.

Swedish Ambassador has said he expects the Certificate of the results of the June 7th elections and the beginning of consultations on the government's establishment, calling on political parties to show readiness for compromise.

In the European part where I come from, compromise is seen, not as weakness, but as force. This situation has been going on for a long time and I think it's important that all political parties unite and create a kind of national unity. As I said, this is happening in other European countries and other countries of the world, but Kosovo is more vulnerable than many other countries. This is hampering the country's economic development and, as a result, there will be less employment opportunities.”, he said.

Westerlund has added that it is important to move forward, saying that perhaps there should be a discussion of how political parties can co-operate in the future and review the constitution, to reach an agreement on how governments can be formed more easily in the future.

He has said the political situation in Kosovo is being pursued by concerns even by international partners.

There is concern in Brussels and I believe that many European capitals, including Stockholm, are also concerned. Therefore, a solution must be found”, it is expressed.

Westerlund has reaffirmed that Kosovo's future is in the European Union and that the creation of functional institutions is necessary for advancing the country in the process of European integration.

“As you know, Albania and Montenegro are moving towards EU membership and could become members within a few years. It is important that Kosovo and other Western Balkan countries follow the same path as soon as possible. I think this is the most important thing for Kosovo. This means more jobs, a more stable government and more stability. In the future, membership in the European Union and later in NATO would bring great benefits to the country.”, Westerlund has declared.
