Spain will seek the European Union on Tuesday, April 21st, to completely suspend the covenant with Israel, arguing that the Israeli government “violates international law”, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced.
The Spanish government this Tuesday will present a proposal to annul the covenant agreement with Israel, because a government that violates international law cannot be a European Union partner,” said Sánchez during a pre-election rally in Andalusia.
The connection agreement between the EU and Israel, which went into effect in 2000, includes a clause related to respect for human rights.
Spain first challenged this agreement in February 2024, when Sánchez and then prime minister of Ireland sent a joint letter to the European Commission, seeking Israel's recognition of its obligations in the field of human rights after the start of the war in Gaza.
Since then, Sánchez's attitude has gradually been strengthened, especially with regard to the war in Lebanon, to today's announcement. This step comes after a letter sent Friday by Ireland, Slovenia and Spain, demanding that the EU-Israel connection agreement be considered at the next meeting of the Council for Foreign Affairs”. /Panorama
