Prime Minister Albin Kurti's recent attempt to unblock the crisis over the election of the new president has met with an immediate rejection by the opposition, which has named his bid as delayed, tactical and politically motivated.
Just three days before the end of the constitutional deadline that ends on Tuesday, the Vetvendosje Movement came up with a new public proposal, inviting The PDK and LDK will jointly propose three candidates for president, one of whom would then be elected by the Parliament.
In its communiqué, the VV said it is taking this step “to avoid another electoral process” and to preserve institutional stability, adding that candidates must be unifying figures and outside the current political scene.
However, the opposition has read the offer as an attempt by Kurt to avoid responsibility for the political crisis and shift the blame to opposition parties.
LDK challenges Kurt with Vjosa Osman
LDK Chairman Lumir Abdixhiku publicly countered Kurti, putting the current president Vjosa Osmani's name at the centre of his reaction.
Abdixhiku said that if Kurti wants political agreement with the LDK, then this party is ready to propose the candidate for president himself ʹ even Osman himself.
We propose the president with full responsibility. We can also propose Vjosa Osmani, if you guarantee us 66 votes for him, Obadiah said.
He also inaugurated Kurt's approach, asking to first clarify with whom he is reaching agreement.
“determine whether you want political agreement with LDK, or you want 90 votes with PDK. If that's the second and you can't without them, then we can't help you”, he said.
Obadiah's statement is seen as a direct counteroffer to Kurt, returning Vjosa Osmani's name to the table with exactly Vetevendosje's support to the presidency.
PDK: Kurt's bid is “political game in the last few minutes”
Even the PDK rejected the VV's offer, with Chairman Bedri Hamza accusing Kurti of trying to manipulate public opinion and conceal responsibility for the institutional blockade.
What we saw was not a reflection, but just a change in the form of manipulation”, Hamza said.
According to him, Kurti is not seeking real consensus, but is trying to impose his will on the opposition.
“Even now it is demanding submission, not co-operation. He's asking for our support, not for the state, but for his power”, Hamza said.
He added that the PDK has offered concrete solutions, while, according to him, Kurti has refused any compromise.
“was not interested in consensus. He was not interested in compromise. There was only one goal: imposing a party president for his power”, the leader of the party said. PDK.
Hamza estimated that the VV's new offer, made just days before the deadline expired, is not a serious struggle for solutions.
Any new offer now in the last few minutes is just political game to reason on and not state responsibility to offer solutions”, he said.
To PDK, adds leader The PDK, institutional stability, is not subject to negotiation, but state interest.
“And stability is not built with daily political improvisements and calculations. It's built into civil faith. With new legitimacy. So we have to go back to the citizens. Let them decide for the direction the country should take. Because democracy is not only a number of votes, but is also the way it uses that trust.”, he said.
The deadline is running, deal still far
With the constitutional deadline expires on April 28th, the country is entering the most critical hours of the political crisis, while the distance between the parties remains great.
The VV is trying to present itself as the side that is offering compromise, but the opposition is accusing him of acting late and only for public consumption, since the prime minister has been refusing for months to build a real consensus.
If no agreement is reached by Tuesday, Kosovo risks entering a new institutional crisis, with the possibility of extraordinary elections increasingly seen as the inevitable scenario. /
