The Department of Justice claims that since October 7th, 2023, Jewish and Israeli students at Harvard have been subjected to harassment, physical violence and prosecution. They further stress that they have endured a hostile educational environment, and the university has consistently denied them access to educational facilities by antisemitic protesters.
The Harvard response to this: he did nothing”, said the 44-page indictment filed at the Massachusetts District Court.
“Facult and his administration turned their eyes to anti-Semiticism and discrimination against Jews and Israelites. Students and faculty members have violated Harvard's rules about time, country and behavior without punishment; the rules Harvard has implemented and will apply against anyone else”, it is further said.
What the government wants is to stop paying all existing grants for university and requires Harvard to return all paid grants from October 7th 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel.
Harvard President Alan Garber has acknowledged that anti-Semitism is a problem at the university and says the institution has made efforts to address it.
Politico points out that this is the latest episode in the dispute between the federal government and the university, but may be the most serious so far. The indictment may even be a trigger for the removal of all federal funds from the university.
Last March, Politico reported, the Trump administration launched a review of grants and federal contracts of about $9 billion of Harvard and later froze more than $2 billion in an anti - Semitism shot at the university.
When the university challenged, the administration challenged Harvard's right to register international students and threatened its exemption from taxes.
Harvard filed charges to regain federal research funds and protect its international students. In September, a federal judge sided with the university and ruled that the government's attempt to freeze the funds was illegal, a major victory for the university. The judge also prevented the government from revoteing university capacity to register international students.
