The number of doctors leaving Kosovo, Sejdiu: For the first time, light is seen at the end of the tunnel

Thus estimates the chairman of the Kosovo Medical Oda, Plerat Sejdiu, in an interview for Indexline, stressing that the trend of the White House immigration is showing clear signs of stabilisation.
All this, according to him, shows that real efforts have been made to create a better perspective for health professionals in Kosovo.
The range of the number of doctors leaving Kosovo is sensitive, and this shows that an investment and an effort has been made to give a light at the end of the tunnel. This is a good signal that the doctor and health worker in Kosovo sees the prospect in the future. That's enough for young doctors to stay in the country because the greatest concern is their departure. This affects working conditions and the quality of specializations. Because we're dealing with a new generation that's very demanding in quality”, says Sejdiu..
Sejdiu has also presented statistics showing a gradual decline in this phenomenon over the years. In 2023, 167 doctors left Kosovo, and in 2024 that number dropped to 111, while 115 doctors left in 2025. Currently, according to him, the number is about 95.
This declining curve shows that a prospect signal is being given to doctors in Kosovo. For this I can congratulate the institutions, who have taken this problem seriously”, he said.
He added that besides wages, a very important factor for doctors is working conditions and professional security.
If working conditions combine with financial stability, it shows seriousness and the doctor sees his prospect of staying in Kosovo”, Sejdiu said.
And after hard work done over the years, Plerat Sejdiu is also targeting another term at the head of the Kosovo Medical House, stressing that there is still energy and vision to continue his work, in the best interests of Kosovo health.
I think I still have energy and vision for building Oda's capacities and raising it to an even more visible level. Despite efforts made over the years, there is still work for Oda to take her place at the level of co-ordination organisations for the establishment of human capacities and for drafting health policies in Kosovo”, he said.
According to Sejdiu, the top priority for the next mandate will be investment in human capacities.
Our main priority “is building capacity and investment in people, which is the largest and most valuable asset in Kosovo. I consider that over the past 20 years little has been done in this direction, but last year we have seen movement in improving working conditions, quality of services and legal infrastructure for the protection of doctors and health workers”, he said.
He stressed that it is also under consideration to improve the quality of specialisations, as well as to review the basic health law and laws regulating the odas of health professionals.
Nor have investments in specialisation and international co-operation been missed. Sejdiu disclosed that the Oda of Doctors has invested over 300 thousand euros over the past two years in doctors' profile and training, including programmes abroad in Turkey, Croatia and Slovenia.
The doctor's <x0... Over 300 thousand euros we have invested over the past two years in medical profiles and abroad such as Turkey, Croatia and Slovenia. We've had direct contacts and with the royal colleges of Great Britain, for the accreditment of specialization Julys, which is a very important, great valuable thing, for our doctors to specialise on the basis of modern Julys rather than on the past. And we'll continue with the investment.”, Sejdiu concluded.
Sejdiu vows to work in establishing modern policies.
My decision is that in co-ordination with the MSH and other relevant institutions, we will be uncompromising in establishing modern policies. I will focus on full co-ordination, on increasing human capacities first, but on improving policies. That's very important. Because we have good laws, but implementation is lack”, he said.
And among his goals remains the complete digitization of medical administrative services. /Periscope
