According to Danish media, about 58 soldiers arrived in Greenland on Monday, joining forces deployed earlier under multinational military exercises Operation Arctic Endurance. Disloding took place a few hours after Trump refused to comment on whether the US could use military force to take over the island.
Copenhagen has stressed that Greenland is not on sale, warning that any such action would seriously jeopardise the NATO alliance. Meanwhile, Secretary General NATO, Mark Rutte, held talks with Danish and Greenland officials for strengthening security in the Arctic.
The crisis has added concerns to the European Union, following Trump's threats of trade tariffs to Denmark, while a survey shows that the overwhelming majority of Greenland's inhabitants oppose joining the US.
