Nineteen people result missing at an Aeon shopping mall and a paper factory after the 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Kyushu Island, an official said, the BBC reported.
The quake has also caused power outages, damaged roads, collapsed a castle wall, and destroyed a footbridge.

When and where did the earthquake in Japan occur?
The quake struck the Cumamoto Prefecture on Kyushu Island at 16:27 local time (07:27 GMT) on Tuesday, with hundreds of thousands of people told to move to evacuation shelters.
Japan's Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that the earthquake had a 7.1 magnitude, which the US Geological Service later measured as 6.8. Earthquake magnitude figures are often updated as seismologists receive and analyse new data.

Kyushu's southern island is the third largest of the four main islands in Japan and the second most populated.
Qumamoto Prefecture is not unknown to earthquakes.
A total of 278 people were killed in 2016 by powerful earthquakes in Cumamoto and nearby Oita Prefectures, according to Japanese public broadcaster NHK.
