The West Virginia National Guard troops are now being sent to Washington, DC, in an escalation of President Donald Trump's efforts to federally obtain law enforcement in the city.
At the request of the Trump Administration, I have instructed the West Virginia National Guard to support the president's initiative to make Washington safe and beautiful. We are placing 300-400 qualified personnel in the country's capital, reflecting our commitment to a strong and secure America”, Western Virginia Governor Republican Patrick Morrisey said in an X post Saturday, CNN reports. The efforts will be funded by the federal government and the state National Guard will provide equipment and training <x0); will be essential for the” mission, according to a statement from the governor's office.
A White House official said on Saturday that troops are part of Trump's ongoing “efforts to make Washington safe and beautiful” and “the National Guard's search has not changed”. Its role in Washington this week, so far, has not been to make arrests.
The “National Guard will protect federal assets, create a safe environment for law enforcement officials to carry out their duties when necessary, and ensure a visible presence to prevent crime”, the official said.
Troop detection is a escalation of Trump's efforts to take over the federal control of the DC police department as he fights against crime in the capital. The president earlier announced that he was deploying over 800 troops of the DC National Guard in the city and was taking federal agents out on the road, but Saturday's movement marks the first time that National Guard troops outside the city are heading to support Trump administration. /Periscope/
