People living in the North are more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes, develop cardiovascular diseases, and suffer from obesity because of poor food habits.
They consume less calcium, fiber and fruit than average in Britain, according to data from the Northern Health Science Alliance Network.
The study also showed that there are 26 percent more fast-food localities in the north than the average in the UK with a bar for every 1,000 residents.
Experts link this food situation to the serious health challenges facing these regions.
The three areas surveyed Northeast, Northwest, and Yorkshire have the highest mortality rates in the country for preventable cancer, liver disease, and cardiovascular disease.
High blood pressure rates in these areas are over 50 percent higher than the average in London.
Researchers stress that taking measures in these regions would have impact throughout the country, as the NHS is estimated to spend over 11.4 billion pounds a year on treatment and management of obesity, while the total social cost amounts to about 74.3 billion pounds annually.
Hannah Davies, executive director of Northern Health Science Alliance and Health Equity North, declared:
In the north, communities face a series of challenges when it comes to putting healthy food on the table.
Northern regions experience higher levels of poverty, so it is no wonder that they have the highest rates of food insecurity and lower weekly food expenses.
Therefore, it is no surprise that we have the highest rates of preventable diseases and obesity, both in children and adults. ”
As King, the famous television cook and one of the “ary Bickers”, said:
The food should feed us, unite us, and help us make progress, but many people in the north are missing the basics: fiber, calcium, fresh vegetables and healthy fats. These are not luxury, they are essential. We need action now... so every family in the North can eat well and live well. ” /Periscopi/
