The US administration has stated it will postpone the implementation of the 50 per cent fee for products coming from the European Union from June 1st, when it was scheduled until July 9th.
President Donald Trump said that, after a good “telephone” with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had agreed to shift the date to give time to negotiations with the bloc.
Earlier in the month, Trump had threatened a 50 - percent tax on all European products and accused the 27-member bloc of being formed specifically to benefit from the United States.
Trump had also said that the Union had been a very difficult interlocutor and that negotiations with him were going down the road without a lead.
Responding to the latest news, President Von der Leyeen stated that the EU and the United States share the closest and most functional trade relationship in the world.
“Europe is ready to advance negotiations quickly and decisively. To reach a good deal, we need time until July 9,”, Von der Leen said in a post on the “X” network.
Last week, European Trade Commissioner and Economic Security Maroš He responded to the American president's threat that the Union is committed to a solution that “functions for both sides and is based on respect rather than threats”. /Periscope/
