“Reporters Without Border” respond to attacks: The government's approach after the report came out confirmed our findings, Kurt has made the situation worse.

The 2023 Reporters Without Borders' report that had shown that Kosovo has noted progress in media freedom, LV head Albin Kurti, had used it. He was praised. But things changed terribly badly in the next two years. After a 2024 drop from 19 countries, Kosovo seized [...]

After a 2024 drop in 19 countries, Kosovo seized a historical record for evil by ranking in the last region, worse than Serbia, writes Express newspaper, broadcasting Periscope.

Political attacks and hostile approach to journalists from the ruling party had particular emphasis on finding the report, and this heavy burden on damaging freedom of expression was inevitably charged with the Kurti government and the party Vetevendosje Movement.

Viewing such a major reggression, the many reactions and concerns raised by journalists' organisations as well as AGK and EFJ, senior government and party officials Kurti is running were mobilised to attack organisation “Reporters without Borders” trying to question the credibility of their annual report on Kosovo.

Kurti's chief of staff, Luan Dalipi, dealt with methodology that was used by RSF, and according to him, Reporters Without Borders' index has many shortcomings. Government spokesman Progress Kryeziu said the report's data is difficult to believe and match reality on the ground.

All these attacks by Kurti Government officials about the Reporters Without Borders report and organisation in an exclusive response to Gazeta Express have been discussed by the head of this Western Balkans organisation's Office, Pavlo Szalai. He has said that instead of criticism and questioning the methodology and the Reporters Without Borders index, the government should take the organisation's analysis as a call for action and hear AGK's proposals to create a working group for press freedom.

Szalai has said that in 2023, when he commented on the Index, Kosovo's prime minister had promised that he would work to further improve the situation, but says he has done worse.

“in 2023, when Prime Minister Albin Kurti commented on the Index, promised positive changes, but his government did exactly the opposite”, he said of Gazette Express.

“Office Leader RSF” for the Western Balkans has said Kosovo authorities should propose systematic measures to protect press freedom, which is in the interest of citizens and the right to inform and integration of Kosovo.

Szalay has said that what happened after the Reporters Without Borders Report was published, has confirmed the report's findings, since there was immediately efforts by the Government to question media credibility, T7 journalist Genc Godanci, has been physically hampered by Kurti's security when he wanted to receive a Kurti statement on Report of Reporters Without Borders, and also AGK journalists have complained of attacks on the post-regress of media freedom in Kosovo.

Since government officials and Kurti's party officials have tried to discredit the report by attacking residents who have filled out Reporters Without Borders' questionnaire, since they say they are against Kurti”, Slazai has said that he could not reveal the identity of the respondents but that <x2organton that they are media experts who have no connection with political parties<3>.

Many who have questioned the credibility of Reporters Without Borders' report, including the Government spokesman, since Kosovo can, according to them, be worse than Serbia, the leader of Reporters without Borders for the Western Balkans, has said the two countries are very close to each other.

Szalay has said political pressure on journalists is much stronger in Serbia than in Kosovo, however, says the situation in Kosovo has seen significant deterioration.

As for economic indicators, Kosovo is worse than Serbia, meaning that in terms of economic aspect, journalists in Serbia can breathe more freely.

As far as uncertainty is concerned, Kosovo comes out noticeably worse than Serbia, which translates at the point of 53 to 80. Szalay says this could come as a result of the weak framework for pursuing attacks on journalists and incidents in the north, which have media in both Albanian and Serbian.

Szalay also mentions wiretapping journalists as in Serbia, since a Kosovo journalist has been found a surveillance device and the state has still resolved as a case. And it also mentions increased attacks on journalists, which were recorded by the Kosovo Journalists' Association.
