Germany's Interior Minister Alexander Dobridt (CSU) plans to present the cabinet on Wednesday to limit family reunification for several categories of refugees. The Interior Ministry confirmed to German news agency dpa (Deutsche Presse-Agentur) a tip on the issue published by the newspaper Bild am Sontag. As agreed in the government coalition agreement between the CDU/ CSU and SPD -- refugees with limited status -- will not be allowed for two years to bring their family members to Germany. Absent cases are ruled out.
Currently, within the framework of family reunification, 1,000 members of refugee families have been allowed to come to Germany every month, even when these refugees have not had a permanent stay in Germany, but an additional (subsidary) status. This protection applies when a person is not accepted as a refugee but faces serious danger in his country of origin. Dobridt added that it must be made clear that the migration policy in Germany has changed.
By now, 1,000 people have been admitted to Germany. Now this ends”, Dobredti told the Bild newspaper. “We must significantly reduce the attractive factors towards Germany. In this way, we also demonstrate that the migration policy in Germany has changed. ”
A possible family reunion since 2018
The family reunion for refugees without asylum status was suspended between March 2016 and July 2018 by the coalition between conservatives (CDU/CSU) and Social Democrats (SPD). The reason given at the time was to avoid pending overload and integration. Since August 2018, a number of 1,000 people a month have been allowed to enter Germany as members of families of persons with this status of protection.
Protests by Nongovernmental Organizations
The 2021 coalition agreement between the SPD, Greens and the FDP in fact stipulated that family reunification would be again possible without restrictions on people in this group. However, this plan was never implemented. More than 30 nongovernmental organisations have called on the federal government to abandon plans to limit family reunification for refugees and instead expand it. /DW/Periscope.
