Rules allowing some migrants to apply for German citizenship after three years instead of the normal five years were introduced by the previous coalition government.
The two bills, proposed by Interior Minister Alexander Dobrendt, must still be approved by Bundestag, Germany's lower house of parliament.
The planned suspension of rules allowing some refugees to bring their families to Germany is seen as highly critical by certain human rights groups.
A case like that of Mohammed, who fled the Syrian civil war, highlights problems that the suspension could cause many who have left their countries of origin to seek refuge in Germany.
Mohamedi made the decision to make the dangerous journey to Germany through Libya and across the Mediterranean in Italy, along with his son, who suffers from cerebral atrophy, hoping to receive medical treatment and one day be reunited with the rest of his family in Germany.
Two and a half years later, he still expects his wife and two daughters to get permission to join him.
