By title: We can't enjoy the word horror; today we have to label “genocide” in Gaza”, the letter was signed by 300 authors, including Alice Zeniter, Leila Slimani, JMG Le Clezio, Virginia Despontes and Mohammed Mbourgar Sarr.
In the letter, part of which has also been published in The Guardian, writers also seek an immediate ceasefire and the release of remaining Israeli hostages held in captivity by Hamas (thinked to be 58).
Below, find a portion of the published letter:
Since Israel destroyed a ceasefire that was supposed to lead to the end of war and the release of hostages, the Gaza attack has been resumed with increased brutality.
Now, repeated public statements by high figures such as Israeli ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir openly express genocide purposes.
The term “genocide” to describe what is happening in Gaza is no longer a matter of discussion for many international lawyers and human rights organisations: International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), Amnesty International, Doctors Without Borders, Human Rights Watch, United Nations Human Rights Council, UN rapporteurs and many other specialists and historians...
Our collective responsibility is engaged. We French - speaking writers have waited too long to speak with one voice. Some of us have already signed opinions and petitions, written, voted and protested. Today, we speak on behalf of our profession to speak for ourselves.
