Ambulance, fire vehicles, and patrol vehicles from several law enforcement agencies moved swiftly towards the university campus, located west of Florida's capital, after the university reported active attackers Thursday.
Hundreds of students ran away from the student center.
Ryan Cedergren, a 21-year-old student, said he and about 30 other people hid on the bowling floor on the ground floor of the student centre after seeing students running from a nearby bar.
“at that moment, it was a survival issue”, he said.
After about 15 minutes of hiding, university police escorted students out of the center, he related.
Junior Joshua Simans, 20, was in the university's main library when, according to him, the alarm rang warning active attackers. Law enforcement officers accompanied him and other students outside the library with their hands on their heads, he said.
Prosecutor General Pam Bond said in a post on social networks that the Justice Department is in contact with FBI agents on the scene. /REL
